GE Healthcare has announced details of a $10 million investment at its manufacturing facility in Carrigtwohill, County Cork. The $10 million will be invested in a new production suite that will see the site’s manufacturing capacity increase by over 50 per cent.
GE Healthcare has three contrast media manufacturing facilities – in Cork, Oslo and Shanghai – and the decision to award the investment contract to Cork is a huge vote of confidence in the Cork site. The production suite will increase the company’s  production outputs, as well as supporting GE Healthcare’s increasing overall market share.
Paschal McCarthy, MD, Global Supply Chain at GE Healthcare said: “The announcement is a major confidence boost for our site and an endorsement of our people and the manufacturing facility. It also sends out a strong statement of where we see this company positioned going forward; this investment will be instrumental in helping GE Healthcare continue to position itself well in the market.”
There are currently almost 450 people employed at the Cork site. With production levels on the rise and further increases projected, GE Healthcare will shortly begin a weekend operation to support the growing manufacturing volumes. This new initiative will lead to further recruitment at the site bringing employee numbers to almost 500.
The site exports to around 70 markets globally, with up to 25 40-foot containers leaving the site weekly for destinations as far away as South Africa, USA and India.
