Ireland’s Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton has announced that Alere, a leading global healthcare company headquartered in Massachusetts, US is establishing its International Business Service Centre at the IDA Ireland Business & Technology Park, Parkmore East, Galway and creating 100 jobs over four years with the support of Government through IDA Ireland.

Alere develops and manufactures products that provide diagnostics and health management solutions. The company is a global leader in rapid diagnostics for cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, toxicology, oncology and women’s health. The Galway-based international business service centre will oversee its commercial operations outside of the US. The jobs being created encompass a range of activities that include Customer and Technical Support, Finance, Legal, Vendor & Logistics Management, Contract Manufacturing Management, Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs.

Making today’s announcement Minister Bruton said,“Today’s announcement by this leading global healthcare company that they are locating their international business centre in Ireland, servicing all of their business outside the US, shows that many of our traditional strengths are still intact. If we are to get out of the crisis we are in, we must build relentlessly on these strengths – including our high-quality workforce, our low corporation tax and other pro-business policies, and our established base of high quality international companies.

However we must go beyond these strengths to tirelessly seek out new opportunities for growth, by creating an environment where new businesses can succeed. Reducing business costs and promoting the innovation and R&D agenda are core to my ambitious plan to create a pro-jobs environment. Although we have made some progress on this to date, we have much more to do so that we can see more announcements like this very positive news from Alere today”.

Commenting on the announcement, David Toohey, President of Business Operations at Alere said, “As our global business expands, we recognise the need to provide a focus for the management of our diverse international commercial operations. Through the establishment of Alere International Ltd in Galway, we are committed to addressing our non-US-based activities from one central location and have decided that Ireland provides the key elements we needed – a talented workforce, a pro-business environment and good prospects for success, as evidenced by the large cluster of healthcare companies operating so well from Ireland. We appreciate the assistance of IDA Ireland, which worked closely with us to get this centre established in Galway.”

Welcoming the announcement, IDA Ireland CEO, Barry O’Leary said “Alere is a very welcome addition to the increasing number of multinational companies basing their international business services operations in Ireland, which is a key target area for IDA. Global leaders in Lifesciences have established international service centres here in recent years and Ireland is well positioned to win further investments in this area.”
